Greek Islands

The Greek islands are a very popular holiday destination for those looking for a laid back break from the problems of day to day living. With so many islands it can become confusing when choosing an island to visit. The Greek islands are divided in to seven main regions, the Ionian islands, located to the west of mainland Greece, the Sporades, the Aegean coast, the islands in the Saronic gulf, the Cyclades, to the east lies the Dodecanese, and to the south, is the largest of the Greek islands, Crete. The purpose of this website is to offer you a guide to each of our featured islands to help you choose which is the right island for you.

Many Greek islands are featured on this website. Each island has its own personality and traditions, historic sights abound, and you do not have to look very far to find a location for that classic Greek photograph.

Greece boats an extensive ferry service, so one very popular way of taking a holiday is to island hop Greek Islands; this is where you stay on one island for a few days, and then simply jump on a ferry to another island. Often when you get off the ferry at the other end, you will find people at the quay side offering accommodation for rent, but during the high season when the Greeks themselves go on holiday, accommodation on some islands can become harder to find, especially during the weekends when sometimes it seems that the whole of Athens try to escape to the islands, especially those within easy travelling from the mainland. One thing to remember when island hopping or when travelling to Greece independently, is that although the weather during the summer months can be absolutely wonderful for that relaxing break, sudden storms can spring up, resulting in cancellations and changes to ferry timetables, so you may wish to consider spending your last night or two in Greece within easy access to your flight home.

The Greek islands have an abundance of good restaurants and tavernas, so eating out is a pleasure. The Greeks have a reputation for being great meat eaters, but vegetarians are also very well catered for. Many of the Greek Islands have a number of very good fish tavernas, but prices can differ greatly and menus can become confusing as often the price of fish is quoted as the price per kilo, so if you are unsure, ask the cost for your order before confirming it. This way there should not be any nasty shocks when finally you get the bill.
