Currently, the airport has a capacity of 90 million passengers but will be expanded to 200 million. The airport is located 35 kilometers from the city of Instanbul.

The road from the airport to the city center was expanded in 2016 to prevent delays. The airport opened in 1955 and is located near the village of Esenboga after which the airport is named.
