Radøy is an island municipality in the county of Hordaland, Norway, and has 269 islands, skerries and peninsulas. The. The nickname, the Green Island, refers to Radøy´s beautiful open cultural landscape. Radøy muncipality has approximately 5.000 inhabitants and covers a area of 111,8 km2. The highest point is Morkefjellet mountain at 217 meter. After crossing the Nordhordland Bridge and the Hagelsund Bridge, turn left at the roundabout in the direction of Isdalstø. At the junction in Isdalstø take a left turn and follow the RV 565 in the direction of Alversund and Alverstraumen. The beautiful Alverstraumen sound, a summer paradise for boating enthusiasts meets you on the far side of the Alversund Bridge.

Radøy municipality has much to offer to both residents and visitors. The community has well developed municipal services and a rich and varied cultural life created by over 100 teams and organisations. The municipality has many attractions including spectacular scenery, monuments, art and museums. Here you´ll find numerous nature trails, and fishing and diving opportunities. Other cultural monuments worth a mention are Bogatunet, Syltastova, Øvre Tveiten and Ystebøtreet.

MANGER

In Manger itself the administrative centre for the municipality of Radøy you will find Manger Senter, which houses a wide assortment of shops and other services. The millennium site on Radøy is the Solend, Nøttveit and Morkefjellet area and surrounding cultural landscape. The open landscape contains many cultural relics and it has a lot of qualities that will appeal to walkers. The walking guide “Turar på Radøy” provides more detailed information.

TJOREHAGEN

The Rhododendron Garden the life’s work of Olav Tjore covers 4 acres and contains more than 300 different types of rhododendron and just as many trees and exotic bushes. Spacious car park also for coaches. Open in the season May – August, every day from 12:00 – 17:00 or by appointment.

BOGATUNET

Turn off the main RV 565 road in the direction of Manger. Follow the signs for Bogatunet. Bogatunet is an old farm dating from the 17th century. The cluster of farm buildings is situated in a historical coastal landscape. The buildings and historical collection show visitors what it was like to live and farm here in former times. Open every Sunday in July and August. Otherwise by arrangement.

THE WEST NORWAY EMIGRATION CENTRE

The West Norway Emigration Centre at Sletta tells the story of emigration from Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane to America in the 19th century. The West Norway Emigration Centre includes the Emigrant church, Brampton Lutheran Church, brought over from North Dakota in the USA and rebuilt at Sletta. 4 commemorative stones have been erected in connection with North American history and the Norwegian contribution during World War II. One stone shows the connection to the Western Isles of Viking times. A schoolhouse, a pioneer´s house, town hall, a jail, a doctor’s surgery and a teacher’s house from pioneer times have also been brought over and rebuilt here. There is also an emigration archive at the centre.

THE STONE AGE TRAIL

From Sletta, continue in the direction of Austrheim. Just before you cross the Fosnstraum Bridge you come to the Stone Age Trail, on which you can ramble through the cultural history of an area that has been populated since the Palaeolithic period, 9,000-10,000 years ago.

EMIGRANT CHURCH

The Emigrant Church at Sletta was consecrated on 6th July 1997. The church was moved from North Dakota, where it was extended in 1908 and consecrated in1921. Norwegian immigrant volunteers built the church. Presently, the church is owned by the foundation “Vestnorsk utvandringssenter”.

HORDABØ CHURCH

The present Hordabø Church was consecrated on 5th August 1875. There has been a church on this site since the Middle Ages, of which the present church is the third. Amongst the historical objects are a christening dish and a water vessel from the 1700s, a chalice from 1744 (restored 1875) and candelabra from the 1700s. Other inventory is from 1875 and later.

MANGER CHURCH

The present Manger Church was consecrated on 27th October 1891. There has been a church on this site since the Middle Ages, of which the present church is the fourth. Amongst the historical objects are a pillory, a chalice from 1794, a chasuble from the 1800s and a candelabrum from the 1700s.

SÆBØ CHURCH

The present Sæbø Church was consecrated on 20th May 1884. There has been a church at Sæbø since the Middle Ages, of which the present church is the third. Amongst the historical objects are a baptismal font, two procession crosses, an altarpiece from 1708, a chalice from 1831 and a chasuble from 1843.

PASTOR´S RESIDENCE and GOVERMENT BUILDING

The Pastor´s residence at Manger was built during 1898 to1899 after the former building was demolished. The architect was the agricultural engineer, Grimnes, who, constant with the traditional style, designed the building in an open square. The courtyard consisted of the Pastor´s residence, tenant home, outbuildings and a storehouse. In the 1960s, the outbuildings and tenant home were demolished and only the pastor´s residence and the storehouse remain today. The Pastor´s residence is presently being used for office premises, meetings and cultural arrangements. The storehouse is used as a small handicrafts shop. In 1998 the old government building from the 1800s was placed beside the Pastor´s residence. This has previously been used as government offices and a bank, amongst other things.

FISHING

There is good fjord and sea fishing in Nordhordland. Not far to the west there are a lot of good fishing spots in the sea, where you can catch large cod, catfish and other types of fish. The open sea, the sounds and the calm waters of the fjords offer many good places to fish both from a boat or from the shore; salmon, trout, mackerel, cod, saithe, ling, pollack, tusk, halibut, flounder, angler fish and catfish. Get hold of a good sea chart with information about depth and the sea bed, and an angling guide with information about where to find the various species of fish together these can provide you with a fine catch!

Some of the fjord and sea fishing spots in our region are Lurefjorden just north of Lurekalven, Lurosen, The Fensfjord, Austfjorden, Risasjøen. The Stone Age site at Straume by Fonstraum bridge. For thousands of years this has been one of the best fishing spots in Hordaland. Toska – there are many good fishing spots along the interesting road from Manger to Toska. The road which follows the curves of the coast, is an attraction in itself. Øyanevegen road from Austrheim out to Sævrøy, Krossøy and Baløy many good fishing spots along the way.
