Overhalla municipality has approximately 3.700 inhabitants and covers a area of 729,3 km2, lies in Nord Trøndelag. The principal industries are agriculture, culture, tourism and industry. Namsen River is one of Norway’s best salmon rivers. It separates the municipality of Overhalla in two sections. Overhalla muncipality lies on the Coastal Route (RV 17).
The municipality includes part of the lake Eidsvatnet, from which the Bjøra river flows into the Namsen River, which runs from the east to the west. By the time it reaches the border to Namsos, Namsen River is already brackish and influenced by the tides the ocean. The Nordelva River also empties into the estuary here. On the south side of Namsen River, there is an area of mountains, including Reinsjøfjell and mountain lakes; the Bangsjøene lakes form the border with Snåsa. The western approaches to Geitfjell lies in Overhalla, while the summit lies in Grong. The southern tip of the lake Storgrønningen lies in Overhalla, while the vast majority of the lake lies in Høylandet.
RANEM CHURCH
The lovely Ranem Church is more than 800 years old. It is constructed in Romanesque style from rocks with a marble base. The altar piece, dating from 1678, is very beautiful and special. For guided tours, contact the tourist office.
BERTNEM FARM
A series of ancient finds bear witness to early settlement, the oldest dating from the era around the birth of Christ. At Bertnem farm by the Namsen River are three monumental hills dating from the Iron Age. Bertnem was considered a king’s estate or chieftains seat for large parts of the Namdalen Valley during the Merovingian period.
THE NAMSEN SALMON & TRAIN EXPERIENCE
The dairy farmer Torger Haugen from Overhalla is a neighbor to both Salmon river Namsen and Bertnem Bridge on Namsosbanen, where passenger traffic ceased in 1978 and last freight trains passed once in 2005. Three unloaded carriages that had been privately owned in Snåsa were acquired, and in Falun, Haugen found an old Norwegian sleeper carriage that had been owned by the Gunde Swan. The carriage was bought expelled and transported 80 miles to Overhalla by car.
In this wagon there are 10 sleeping quarters and 20 beds. The other carriages are converted to a restaurant, bar / utility room and sanitary wagon. At the same time, Bertnem Bridge is well controlled and reinforced, and 450 square meters of terraced floors have been added around the unique hotel.
MÆLAFERJA
The only cable driven ferry in Norway that is still ready to be used. The ferry carry you over the river Namsen in Overhalla municipality between Mælen and Homstad.
COASTAL ROUTE (KYSTRIKSVEIEN)
Explore the coastline of Norway and enjoy one of Norway´s finest tourist roads, or simply find your paradise for relaxation and peace of mind. The Costal Route (Kysriksveien or Rv17) is an exciting 650 km long stretch of road between Steinkjer in the south and Bodø in the north.
Apart from the traditional campsites, you will find self catering accommodation like Cabins, Fisherman cabins, or seahouses in most places along the route. In most of the places boatrental is available.
FISHING
Salmon fishing in the Namsen and Bjøra Rivers is a great attraction. You can fish from land, try fly-fishing or fish from a boat at very reasonable prices. Long experience as a fisherman is by no means necessary for salmon fishing. Contact one of the establishments offering overnight accommodation or the tourist information offfice, where you can buy fishing licenses and hire the fishing gear needed. In addition, fishing licenses are available at the local sports dealer’s, who also keeps records of the sizes of salmon caught.
GOLF
Namdal Golfclub is a golf course with 9 holes and a variation of difficulties. The course lies at Grande Farm, approximately 4 km from Overhalla Center.
