Antalya Old Town, known locally as Kaleiçi, forms the historic heart of the city and remains one of its most atmospheric districts. The area surrounds the ancient harbour and consists of narrow cobbled streets, Ottoman houses, Roman structures and scenic viewpoints. The district dates back more than two thousand years, with origins in the era of the Kingdom of Pergamon. Later, the Romans expanded the harbour and transformed the city into a major trading hub between Europe and Asia.

Kaleiçi’s history stretches back to 200 BC, when it was founded as Attalia by the ruler of Pergamon. The harbour served as a base for his fleet and later became one of the most important Roman ports in the region.
Over the centuries, the district experienced fires, reconstructions, changes of rulers and wars, yet many structures remain intact. Hadrian’s Gate is one of the best‑preserved examples of Roman architecture in the city.
