On the coast of Central Norway, north-west of the islands Hitra and Frøya, with the Atlantic Ocean as it´s nearest neighbour lies the fishing village of Sula. Sula municipality has approximately 8.100 inhabitants and covers a area of 58,7 km2. The administrative centre is the village of Langevåg. Langevåg is located approximately 10 minutes by boat from the centre of Ålesund.
Other villages include Solevåg, Fiskarstrand, Veibust, Leirvågen, and Mauseidvågen. Sula is an island, bordered by Breisundet on the west, Storfjorden and Vartdalsfjorden to the south, Hessafjorden and Borgundfjorden to the north, and the narrow Vegsundet strait to the east. Manufacturing and production is the most important economical sector. Shipyards, fish processing, textile manufacturing and furniture production are especially vital. Most famous brand from Sula is Devold of Norway, with high quality woollen sweaters and underwear.
The Sula nature is typically coastal, forest is sparse, rock and heather dominate. The highest elevation, Vardane, is 776 metres above sea level. Sula, known as the musical township, with Ytre Suløen, Brazz Bros, and Annbjørg Lien to name but a few, also has a wealth of outdoor life and sports. Its neighbouring municipalities are all separated from it by sea. Hareid to the west, Ørsta to the south, Giske to the northwest, and Ålesund to the north and east.
Sula is connected to Ørsta by ferry. Also, Sula is connected to Hareid by ferry at Sulesund.
The village is situated at the end of the road on the north side of the island of Sula, about 7 kilometres northwest of Mauseidvåg. The village is across the fjord from Ålesund. There is a passenger ferry from Langevåg to Ålesund which takes approximately 7 minutes. Driving by car to the city is about a 25-minute drive on the nearby E39 highway, and the public bus may take up to 1 hour.
Langevåg is surrounded by mountains, forests, lakes, and seashore. The city centre includes shops, a gas station, two schools, a medical centre, retirement homes, offices, and service buildings. The Devold factory is world famous for its Devold blaatrøye and is still producing knitwear for its own brand, Devold of Norway. The Devold factory has a museum, Moods of Norway factory outlet store, guided tours, and a café. Pay a visit to such places as Vasset Outdoor and Sports Park, with its hiking trails, floodlit trails, stadium, shooting area, fishing and horseriding facilities. There is also the Sula Sportsdykkerklubb which offers scuba diving and free diving in the fjord.
One of the most modern fish-oil factories in the country, Vedde Sildoljefabrikk, located at Vedde, the textile company Devold of Norway, known for everything from sweaters to underwear, Devold AMT produces composites to include the use of windmills and Annø furniture stock quality furniture including the famous Beito series.
SUNNMØRE
Sunnmøre is the southernmost traditional district of the western Norwegian. Its main city is Ålesund. Though it is one of the three traditional districts in Møre og Romsdal, Sunnmøre is home to more than half the population of the county. The district is made up of mainland as well as several large islands such as Gurskøy and Hareidlandet, plus many small islands.
There are many local newspapers throughout Sunnmøre, as well as one that aims to cover the entire region, published from Ålesund, called Sunnmørsposten.
THE SUNNMØRS ALPS
It is a great pieature for us to welcome you to our “kingdom” – in the centre of Northern Europe´s fjord and alpine country. The region is spectacular, stretching from deep-blue fjords, via verdant valleys with emerald-green slopes way up to the highest wild peaks with their white glaciers. This is not just a picture, but reality, a landscape which you can become fond of.
Majestic peaks and a rugged alpine massif distinguish the Sunnmørs Alps from other mountain areas. Mountains plunge vertically into the fjord from a height of 1.500 – 1.600 metres and from the summit of Jakta at 1.588 metres, ther is a perpendicular fall of 1.821 metres to the bottom of the fjord. This will give you some idea of the enormous dimensions between the summits and the seabed below the waters of the fjords.

Sula is every fisherman´s great dream, and is the place for you if you want the genuine experience of a small, fishing-based society. Fishermen from the entire region were drawn to the attractive fishing areas of Sula. Borgundfjorden known for Cod fishing and south of the island lies Storfjorden.
