The Bodrum Museum is the only underwater archeology museum in Turkey. It is also claimed to be the world’s biggest underwater museum. The majority of the artifacts owned and displayed here were acquired from the shipwrecks discovered and donated by the sponge divers. Underwater searches in Turkey are continuing since 1960s. The well known ones are 16th century BC Fenike1-Şeytan Deresi shipwreck, 14th century BC Kas-Uluburun shipwreck, 12th century BC Fenike-Cape Gelidonya shipwreck, 3rd century BC Marmaris-Serçe seaport Hellenistic shipwreck, 4th century AD Bodrum-Yassıada late Roman shipwreck, 7th century AD Bodrum-Yassıada Byzantines shipwreck, 11th century AD Marmaris-Serçe seaport glass shipwreck, and 16th century AD Bodrum-Yassıada Ottoman shipwreck.
Among the artifacts exhibited in the museum are amphoras, carpenter’s tools, coins, oil lamps, kitchen appliances, and censers2 that are found in the shipwrecks.
