Jondal Norway

Jondal municipality has approximately 1.500 inhabitants and covers a area of 209,9 km2 lies in the Conty of Hordaland. The district centree is Jondal and Herand. Folgefonna Summer Ski Centre is situated on a surfaced road of 19 km (Toll road) leads from the ferry quay to the glacier edge of Norway´s 3rd largest glacier. An ideal starting point for attractive hikes to the top of the glacier about 1550 metres above sea level. The main attractions are Folgefonna glacier, Folgefonna Summer Ski Centre, Hereiane and Tveddalstølen.

JONDAL

Jondal is the village with the characteristic architecture styIe. The community centre with shops, several types of accommodation and many beautiful buildings. Over the village the big “Hardanger Cathedral” looms and close by you find many Swiss houses with stone roofs and well kept orchards. Small gravel walks bind the houses together. By the sea you find bronze age and recent heritages. Here is also a tourist office, garage and boat building school.

HERAND

Herand is the small village with the many attractions. Herand lies between Jondal centre and Utne and has a shop, several types of accommodation and a picturesque guest harbour. Frequent heritages, such as boat houses from the period when Herand housed a busy boat building activity, the protected verical saw by the mouth of the river, the mill house close by and a unique rock carving field.

FOLGEFONNA SUMMER SKIING CENTRE

Folgefonna Summer Ski Centre is situated on the glacier at 1,200 metres above sea level, 19 km from Jondal ferry quay. The ski lift is 1100 metres long. Fine conditions for cross-country skiing, marked tracks to the top of the glacier at 1640 m above sea level. Snowboard, alpine- and cross-country slopes. Cafeteria with warm- and cold food for sale. Ski hire. In the month of June there is a 3-week snowboard camp with youngsters from USA, France, Great Britain, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. National teams from USA, France, Switzerland, Sweden and Norway are practicing alpine, cross-country, triathlon, and freestyle here with us. Folgefonna Breførarlag arranges guided glacier trekking, and a hike on the glacier is a memory for life.

VIKETUNET

Lies in Jondal. Proper farm dating from the 15th -17th century, 2 minutes walk from the ferry quay. The courtyard, where the country policemen lived, contains 7 houses, the oldest from about 1611. The furniture in the main house gives you the impression that there are still living people here. In the courtyard is also a poultry yard.

BOAT BUILDING SCHOOL

Lies in Jondal. The school has resumed old traditions and teaches students to continue the boat-building traditions. They build wooden boats both for fishing purposes and spare time activities, from tiny dinghies to ocean going sailing vessels. They repair and restors old boats.

THE CHURCH BOAT

Lies in Jondal. Lies in ths harbour from May to October. Ths boat, with 5 pair of oars, is new, but it is a true copy of an old church boat. The boat can be rented by appointment with the tourist office.

KJØLHALINGSKERET

From about 1850, in Jondal harbour. Used in careening the Hardanger yachts during ths Nordland traffic.

THE SWlSS HOUSES

Jondal has a unique collection of Swiss houses from 19th and 20th century. Take a walk at one of the many gravel roads and have a closer look at the houses with the fine stone roofs, windows in cross post style and the well kept orchards.

AKJARHAUGEN

Park ground in the centre of Jondal with a good view, bronze age heap of stones and a memorial from 1914.

TVEDDAL DAIRY FARM

Lies in Jondal towards Folgsfonna. On the road to Krossdalen this old dairy farm with 8 remaining houses of a total 25 is situated. All the sites are marked and lis in idyllic surroundings. Activs operetion up to Iast year. Car road right up to the farm. Toll road. Fine hiking terrain.

FIREHOUSE

Lies in Herand. At Vesssl Hardanger’s Iargest firehouse and Norways smallest brewery is situated. It has bsen constructed according to old building traditions with timber and slate. Here beer is being brewed from old recipes. Service, well suitable for groups, 5 – 40 persons by prebooked appointments. Fully licensed.

TVEITEN OPPGANGSSAG

Lies in Herand. Special kind of saw for sawing vertically. Boat-building used to be an important industry in Hersad and an added income for the farms. The timber was cut on a water-driven “oppgangssag” that was built in 1700. The saw has several blades and was used up to the end of 1970 due to the traditional coast- and boat building milieu in Herand. In 1992 the saw was restored. Demonstration 07.06 – 27.07 every Thuseday 1500 or contact the tourist office for additional information.

MILL IN A RIVER ENVIRONMENT

Lies in Herand. The mill has been restored and is situated in its original environment. Ueed in grinding grein by water power. The mill will be operated after appointment with tourist office.

ROCK CARVINGS

At Bakke in Herand neer the main road to Utne (route 550) one finds about 150 special rock-carvings with unique human bodies, sacrifice hollows and fertility symbols from the Bronze Age. Information board at site. Don’t step on or scratch the mountain.

SLATE INDUSTRY

The famous Hardanger slate is found in Solesnes. Most of the older houses in the municipality have roofs from this slate quarry at Solesnes. The oldest slate is dating back to early 1600 and already before 1400 millstone was used here. Stop at Solesnes and have a look at the old slate face, the stone huts and the trail for the slate down to the fjord.

BOATHOUSES

Boathouses at Svåsand in a row, one of these timbered. Excellent samples of old coastal culture and boat building traditions.

JONDAL SCHOOL MUSEUM

The museum lies at Årsand, dating from 1903. Come and see what a school was like at the time of our great grandfathers.

HEREIANE

Lies between Svåsand and Herand. A characteristic natural landscape with “undulating” mountain formations from fjord to mountain. Fascinating modelled terrain with rich occurrences of rock species. By the main road lies the millennium monument of Jondal – adopted to the landecape. An ideal meeting spot and rest area.

JONDAL CHURCH

This beautiful church called “The Herdanger Cathedral” was built in 1888 and is the largest in Hardanger. The altarpiece has been painted by Nils Bergslien. The old church belle originate from 13th century. Mid June – mid July there are organ concerts in the church every Wednesday 1600 – 1630. 2 – 3 Sunday concertes and a musical devotion.

HUNTING
