The most important motorways and main roads to and from the whole of Norway go through Akershus. Travelers by train, coach, car and boat to and from the area around Oslo have to pass through Akershus. There is a very good public transport system carrying large numbers of passengers between Akershus and the surrounding area daily, facilitating travel around the county. This provides an alternative to the big city, whether it’s for just an afternoon trip or a longer stay. You can get to all parts of Akershus within one hour from the centre of Oslo. The most modern airport in Europe lies in Akershus Oslo Airport.
DRØBAK
Drøbak is an idyllic coastal town, from its origins as a little coastal village, the town grew through its timber export business, which then brought shipping interests to the town. This encouraged a lot of trade and considerable export of ice in the last century. These industries influenced Drøbak’s architectural style and gave distinction to the growing coastal town.
Early Drøbak had ferries that crossed the fjord, which have been largely replaced in modern times with an underwater tunnel. If you just want to go for pleasure then take a trip with Jacobine that was a former ferry.
In summertime, cruise ships come to visit Oslo almost every day. Often, as many as four or five cruise ships visit per day, in addition to all the regular traffic, and you see them all from Drøbak. Drøbak is a popular sea-side tourist spot and has mild / warm summers.
Drøbak is known for its many art galleries. The town has Christmas shop called Julehuset (the christmas house), and letters often end up in Drøbak from Europe.
OSCARSBORG FORTRESS
Oscarsborg fortress is situated on the shores of the Drøbak Sound, at the narrowest point of the Oslofjord. It was built to protect Oslo from possible amphibious attack. The oldest buildings present in Oscarsborg were built between 1846 – 1853. The fortress was awarded its first commander in 1853 and a garrison was positioned here in the same year. During a visit to the fortress by King Oscar in 1855 the fortress was named Oscarsborg.
Oscarsborg and Colonel Birger Eriksen from Moskenes, who was commander of Oscarsborg Fort is best known for the sinking of the German warship “Blücher” on the 9th of April 1940, the day that Germany invaded Norway during the Second World War. The action allowed the King and government enough time to flee Oslo so that they could lead Norway’s effort in the struggle for liberation from abroad.
Oslofjordtunnel or Oslo Fjord Tunnel is a subsea road tunnel under the Oslo Fjord that connects Hurum municipality in the county of Buskerud to Akershus county on eastern side of the fjord. The Oslofjordtunnel is one of the longest underwater tunnels of its kind in Northern Europe; it is 7.2 km long and reaches a depth of 134 metres below sea level, with a maximum gradient of 7%. The tunnel was opened by King Harald V on June 29, 2000, providing an alternative method of transport between the east and west side of the Oslo Fjord, replacing the former ferry line between Drøbak and Storsand.
The tunnel has one lane in each direction with an extra lane in the inclining direction on the slopes. The speed limit of 80 km/h is enforced by road rule enforcement cameras. The tunnel is partially toll financed with a toll plaza on the east of the tunnel.
