Culture in Turkey

Being part of the Eastern and Ottoman culture that value being modest and conformist and is easily satisfied if a person has warm cloth and is not hungry he/she does not thrive to reach to a higher level material ownership and does not care for being rich. He also also expects everything from his government and believes in whatever government says or does. He looks up to the government as like a child looks up to his father and passive most of the time unless it comes to the level of rebellion. Additionally, belief that elders know best. Conformity to the majority were part of the values of the Turkish society. However, this eastern view of life has changed tremendously recently people became more individualistic, more materialistic, more inquisitive moving away from Eastern to Western values.

The dress style in Turkey is similar to the one in the western world. This dress style is adopted with the initiation of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1928 after the Republic of Turkey was founded.

Turkey is well known for the candy called the Turkish Delight, the hand made rugs and carpets, and hospitality of its people.

The national alcoholic drink is anise-flavored hard liquor (apéritif) called Rakı. It is approximately 90 – 100 proof (45% – 50% alcohol). The West might attribute the low level consumption of Wine to the religion of the majority in Turkey. However, if it is carefully examined it might be seen that it is due to the popularity of Rakı and the palate of Turkish people.
