Berlevåg Norway

Berlevåg is a lively fishing community in the north west of the Varanger peninsula in Norway, facing the powerful Arctic Ocean. Situated at 70′ N Berlevag´s 1.120,1 km2 is mainly made up of untouched nature of an arctic character. The approximately 1.100 inhabitants live in the fishing port Berlevåg, which is also the administrative center of the municipality, and in the fishing village Kongsfjord.

The open terrain is excellent for recreation both in summer and winter and for those interested in geology this is an exciting area. Angling opportunities are good both in mountain lakes and in the Kongsfjord river, which is a renowned salmon river.

The most important sources of income are fishery, fish processing, trade, as well as public and private service. Berlevåg is strategically located on the coast of Finnmark, close to the rich king crab fishing grounds. The local fishing fleet ensures high quality products. Communications to and from Berlevåg are very good. The Coastal Steamer (Hurtigruten) has daily departures and Widerøe´s have daily flights.

MIDNIGHT SUN

We have the Midnight Sun in our region from 20th May – 20th July. During this period, the sun stays above the horizon, and it is light 24 hours a day. The sky must be clear and there must be unobstructed visibility northwards in order to see the Midnight Sun. A summer night on the fjord or in the mountains is an experience not to be missed, you can go fishing in the fjord, which contains splendid variation of fish, or you can take a walk in the wilderness surrounding.

NORTHERN LIGHTS

Aurora Borealis is the Latin name for the Northern Lights – solar winds that meet the atmosphere in a zone around the magnetic North Pole. The Northern Lights are only visible when the sky is dark and clear, from August to April, and they are most intense from 10 pm to midnight. The region on the 700 northern latitude is a fantastic place for experiencing the beautiful and intense play of colours given off by the Northern Lights.

POLAR NIGHT

The dark time, or the long, dark Polar Night, lasts from 30th November – 12th January – there is only a twilight-dusk type of light (the blue light) for a few hours during the middle of the day. This does not mean that it becomes totally dark, however. The aurora borealis trails its multicoloured banner across the sky and the moon lights the scene just like the nightlight of Our Lord. The experience of the winter with the uniqueness of the light, the northern lights and snow is fantastic. Especially beautiful is the blue light southwards, just before it becomes dark.

BERLEVÅG MEN´S CHOIR

Known from the movie “Cool and crazy”. The film, which follows a year in the life of the chorus and the lives of its members, simply seems to strike a responsive chord with a wide diversity of people. The whole-heartedness of its cast and its no-holds-barred monologues by choir members that reveal all their human flaws and goodness appeal to the public. Not to mention the basic down-to-earth qualities and sheer stamina of these residents of Berlevåg, who manage to survive and spread human warmth under the harshest of Arctic conditions.

Scenes shot during wild winter storms leave the viewer awestruck, just as the unusual scenes of an overweight middle-aged member of the choir expounding on Communist doctrine from his bathtub leave the viewer bemused portraying a small fishing community out in the exposed ocean mouth of Northern Norway, where a vigorous local men´s choir reflects life in all its facets, in all kinds of weather.
