Located just 20 minutes from downtown Oslo, Holmenkollen is one of Norway’s most celebrated landmarks, known for its deep-rooted skiing heritage and panoramic views over the city and Oslofjord. The name “Holmenkollen” refers to the hill (“kollen”) on which the area is built, historically used for skiing and recreation since the late 19th century. Over the decades, Holmenkollen has evolved into a symbol of national pride and international winter sports excellence.
Holmenkollen Ski Jump
The current Holmenkollen Ski Jump, inaugurated on March 3, 2010, is the world’s most modern ski jump facility. It features a 60-meter-high start house and is constructed from 100 tons of steel. Notably, it is the first ski jump with integrated wind protection and remains the only steel-built jump globally.
From the tower—standing 417 meters above sea level—visitors enjoy sweeping views of Oslo and the surrounding fjord. The jump has hosted ski competitions since 1892, including the 1952 Winter Olympics, and has been rebuilt 14 times to meet evolving standards.
Local tip: Visit during Holmenkollrennet in March to experience the festive atmosphere and witness elite ski jumpers in action.
Kollensvevet Zipline
The Kollensvevet zipline offers a thrilling descent from the top of the ski jump, simulating the sensation of a ski jump. Spanning 361 meters with a vertical drop of 107 meters, it provides one of the best aerial views of Oslo.
Local tip: Book early in summer months, as time slots fill quickly during peak tourist season.
The Ski Museum
Founded in 1923, the Ski Museum is the oldest of its kind in the world. Located inside the ski jump structure, it showcases 4,000 years of skiing history—from Viking-era skis to modern racing equipment. Exhibits include polar expedition gear from Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen, as well as memorabilia from the 1952 Oslo and 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics.
Local tip: Don’t miss the ski simulator, which gives a realistic sense of what it feels like to jump from Holmenkollen.
Tryvann Vinterpark
Just minutes from Holmenkollen lies Tryvann Vinterpark, offering 14 slopes and 6 lifts for alpine skiing and snowboarding. The park includes terrain for beginners and professionals, with floodlit trails for evening skiing.
Local tip: Families should explore the children’s area near Tommkleiva, which offers gentle slopes and ski instruction.

- Tryvann Ski School: Provides tailored instruction for all skill levels in alpine, telemark, and snowboarding.
