The world’s narrowest fjord is located in unique and untouched nature in Sogn. Nærøyfjorden is on UNESCO’s list of world cultural and natural heritage sites.
The wildest and most beautiful branch of the Sognefjord. Fjord cruises in unique setting, with sheer, snow-topped mountains, waterfalls and idyllic farms clinging to the mountainsides. The Nærøyfjord is 17 km long and the narrowest point is only 250 metres wide. The passage through Nærøyfjord is one of the most dramatic fjord trips in Europe.
Few places in the world can offer such a magnificent landscape as the fjords in Norway. This applies not least to the narrow and spectacular Nærøyfjord, which with its steep mountain sides of up to 1,800 metres, wild waterfalls and vibrant cultural landscapes can take your breath away.
The unique fjord arm is 19 kilometers long and only 250 meters wide at its narrowest point. The mountain massifs around the fjord rise precipitously, with constant cascading waterfalls down the mountain sides. In several places along the fjord you can see small farms with no road connection, which is a legacy from the time when the fjord was the most important traffic artery in the area. In other words, the Nærøyfjord is rich in contrasts and offers a unique interplay between natural and cultural landscapes. Here we find great contrasts from the shoreline with its mild climate, to high mountains with glaciers and fonns.
In the Nærøyfjord area, there are also several untouched and wilderness areas. A hike in Aurlandsdalen is something completely in itself. Here the Aurland River winds its way through the landscape, and you have a fantastic view of the fjord and mountains. The valley starts on the high mountain plateau of Hardangervidda, goes through the mountains of Skarveheimen, continues through lush landscape in Aurlandsdalen and ends at Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord.
There are a number of opportunities to see the Nærøyfjord up close from the fjord. Among other things, you can experience the beautiful nature on various tours by both boat and ferry – or you can go paddling.
