Surrounded by the stunning moorland of North Yorkshire the beautiful coastal town of Whitby is a mix of eclectic attractions, fantastic food and drink and is even home to Dracula. Whitby is one of the larger coastal towns in North Yorkshire and is reachable by train. With it’s great transport links it offers access to the array of attractions of the region but there’s so much to do you might find it hard to tear yourself away. Walking amongst the charming cobbled streets with an ice cream it’s easy to see why Whitby has been voted Best Seaside Resort in the UK.

Whitby is home to a range of unusual attractions from the Dracula experience to the Captain Cook Memorial Museum or a leisurely stroll down the pier. It’s also worth 

climbing the 199steps it takes to climb to reach Whitby Abbey. Built on the cliffs the abbey is a notable example of historical interest and also offers beautiful views down onto the coastal line.

This ancient seaport has a wealth of shopping opportunities. From shops selling rocks, shells and other seaside memorabilia to trendy boutiques you’ll find it easy to find a bargain. The exceptional scenery has also produced a buzzing arts scene with lots of local galleries.

If your timings right you might manage to catch the twice yearly Whitby Goth festival, inspired by the heritage of Dracula but if you miss it over the summer months the town is rife with different events. From the Whitby Regatta which, with it’s three day treasure hunt is ideal for children to more traditional life boat shows you’ll be sure to find something for every taste. As for activities there are plenty of opportunities for surfing, fossil hunting or even renting a boat to explore further out to sea.

If the seascape isn’t appealing then make sure you extend your visit to the nearby areas. Whitby is closely surrounded by pastoral views and walks and is well within reach of beautiful Yorkshire villages such as Goathland as well as quieter seaside resorts such as Robin Hoods Bay. For the seasoned walker the trails for Cleveland Way and the Lyke Wake Walk are all close by.

The diversity Whitby offers means there’s something for everyone and with so much to enjoy this picturesque town is perfect for a day out or a longer break.
