Ripon is a delightful small city and thriving market town in the stunning area of Yorkshire Dales, surrounded by breathtaking countryside which attracts nature lovers, walkers and cyclists. Ripon is also the perfect base to explore the rest of North Yorkshire and the North York Moors National Park.
Ripon is also full of historical interest, there are numerous religious buildings to explore, with the beautiful Gothic architecture of the towns Ripon Cathedral and the nearby 12th century Fountains Abbey visitors have plenty to see and do. There are plenty of places to eat and drink numerous shops and a weekly Thursday market held in the splendid 700 year old market place.
The Spa Gardens offers a great day out for families and keen golfers with a crazy green and an 18 hole putting course. Ripon also has three museums in its centre, the Prison and Police Museum, Ripon Courthouse Museum and Ripon Workhouse Museum all offering an insight to Victorian life.
Perhaps most famous for its ‘Garden Racecourse’ which holds flat races between April and September, a day out at Ripon Racecourse is excellent entertainment for families as well as horse lovers.
Another wonderful feature of Ripon is the little known and recently restored marina by the canal. In summer months it is possible to hire canoes and there are pleasant walks along the canal path offering a relaxing place to sit and watch the boats meandering by.
