The ancient and picturesque City of Durham is situated on the River Wear in the North East of England in County Durham, and is packed with medieval history. On a hill top in the centre of the city stands the magnificent Romanesque Cathedral which overlooks the river and the streets below. Durham has many places of interest to visit and the centre is now a designated conservation area. Amongst the numerous listed buildings there is the 11th Century Durham Castle, Durham Prison and Durham University.

The beautiful tree lined river is host to many competitive water sports. Pleasure boats meandering back and forth offer visitors sedate cruises from which to enjoy the atmosphere and scenery.

The historical market square still holds regular weekly markets and there is also a permanent indoor market. The surrounding streets are filled with a wide variety of shops and galleries and form the main commercial area of the city.
