Cockermouth is a picturesque market town, located on the fringe of the Lake District in the UK, where the River Cocker and the River Derwent meet. Situated amidst peaceful mountains and lakes, Cockermouth provides visitors with a more serene atmosphere than many nearby towns. Lakes such as Ennerdale, Crummock Water, Loweswater and Bassenthwaite are only a few minutes traveling distance away.

Cockermouth Castle was built in the thirteenth century and though now privately owned, tours are available in July during the Cockermouth Festival.

Famed poet William Wordsworth was born in Cockermouth, the large Georgian home where he was born sits on the high street and attracts great interest from visitors to the town.

Other places of interest include the Museum of Printing as well as Jennings Brewery, which operates tours to explain the process of brewing tradition beer. Kirkgate Centre is Cockermouth’s home for art, theatre and music and offers a range of activities, workshops, exhibitions and plays. A notable attraction, publicised by the Cockermouth and District Civic Trust, is the walking tour that takes visitors through the town’s history and reflects on some of the work done by local historians.

The town has a range of local shops, eateries, antique shops and galleries, as well as supermarkets, several churches, hairdressers, medical and dental surgeries, a sports centre and chemists. There are a few hotels as well as a youth hostel situated on a sixteenth century mill. There are an array of restaurants and pubs, many of which serve locally brewed Jennings beers.
