Aleksandrovac is a small town located approximately 230 kilometers south of Belgrade, in the western part of central Serbia. It lies in the valley between the Kopaonik, Jastrebac, and Goč mountains, forming part of the Rasina District. The town is bordered by Trstenik and Vrnjačka Banja to the north, Kraljevo, Raška, and Kruševac to the west, and the Brus municipality to the south. It can be reached via Kruševac from the east and via Trstenik and Kraljevo from the west.
The name “Aleksandrovac” is derived from the personal name Aleksandar, likely in honor of a historical figure or ruler. The town has long been associated with viticulture and is often referred to as the “Serbian capital of wine.” Its wine-making tradition dates back centuries, with local families cultivating grapes and producing wine in the fertile valleys surrounding the town.
Wine Heritage and Local Culture
Aleksandrovac is the heart of the Župa wine region, one of the oldest and most renowned wine-producing areas in Serbia. The region benefits from a favorable microclimate and rich soil, ideal for growing indigenous grape varieties such as Prokupac and Tamjanika.
Local tip: Visit during the Župa Wine Festival, held annually in September, to sample wines from over 30 local producers and enjoy traditional music and food.
The town is home to the Wine Museum, which showcases the history of viticulture in the region, including antique tools, archival documents, and a cellar with rare vintages.
Local tip: Ask for a guided tour at the museum to learn about the evolution of wine-making techniques and the role of wine in Serbian culture.
Natural Surroundings and Outdoor Activities
The surrounding mountains—Kopaonik, Jastrebac, and Goč—offer opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and nature excursions. The area is rich in biodiversity, with forests, meadows, and streams that attract outdoor enthusiasts year-round.
Local tip: For a scenic day trip, head to Goč Mountain, which is less crowded than Kopaonik and offers well-marked trails and picnic areas.
