Sunndal muncipality in Norway has approximately 7.200 inhabitants and covers a area of 1.713,7 km2. Sunndal is in area the largest community in Møre and Romsdal and stretches all the way from the fjord into the Dovre Mountains. It has fiercely beautiful scenery including Innerdal, Norway´s loveliest mountain valley, and Åmoten, a gorge where several waterfalls meet in an inferno of water. Mountain valleys lead you into the realm of wild reindeer and musk oxen.

By the fjord lies Sunndalsøra, trade and service centre to the interior of Nordmøre. Approximately 4.000 live in the township centre Sunndalsøra. Here you find the large plants of “Hydro Aluminium”.

The Aursjø Road runs over the mountain to Eikesdalen and Mardøla and offers breathtaking scenic views. Sunndal itself with the salmon river of Driva is fertile and green with big farms.

Sunndal can offer a varied nature summer and winter, whether you like skyreaching peaks, idyllic mountain valleys or sunny days by or on the fjord. With 23 peaks higher than l.8OO metres above sea level, 259 glaciers and over 300 good angling Iakes, Sunndal has tremendous opportunities to offer nature lovers of oll ages.

LEIKVIN CULTURAL PARK

Leikvin local rural museum has a comprehensive collection of buildings and objects from old farming culture in Sunndal. In the collections there are also sevrnal items from “The Age of ohe English” at the end of the 19th century in particular connected to the legendary Lady Barbara Arbuthnott. The park further consists of the Philiphagen ganden – a beautiful rhododendran garden, the Løykja burial ground – one of the largest viking burial grounds in the country, and Løykja cemetery – still in use and where among others Barbara Arbuthnott and her son James are buried.

ÅMOTAN

Åmotan is a naturee phenomenon without parallel in this country! It hjas steep diffs, moraines aad natural terraces formed during the lost ice age. A fanshaped river system where seven rivers meet. Three of those rivers form magnificent waterfalls down Åmotan. Botanically the area is among the very richest in the country. At the mountain farms of Svisdalen and Jenstad surrunding the gorge, there is active agriculture and farm buildings of high conservation value. Åmotan can be seen at close range from marked touring paths – or from the lookout point on the road between Gjøra and Grødalen.

THE AURSJØVEGEN MOUNTAIN ROAD

The Aursjøvegen mountain road offers fantastic nature experiences in dramatic West-Nonvegian nature. From Sunndalsøra the road goes through the narrow and steep Litdalen valley, and in S-shaped curves it climbs up Hallarvasslia. The road then goes through the Torbudalen vally to the Aursjøen mountain lake at a height of about 900 meters above sea level, in an open and magnificent mountain landscope with good view towards the Sunndalsfjella mountains and the Dovre area.

Further along the stretch that makes many hold their breath: through the four hairpin curves (180 degrees) of Finnsetlia and down to the Eikesdalen valley. A detour to Mardalsfossen, the highest free waterfall of Northern Europe, is recommended. Total road length Sunndalsøna – Eresfjord 100 kilometers. The Aursjsøvegen road was orginally built as a construction road in connection with the establishment of the Aura hydro-electrical power plant in 1947 – 1950, and it was later extended to Eikesdalen.

INNERDALEN

Innerdalen – often refered to as the most beautiful valley in Norway – is an official landscape protection area. A cherished destinatian for mountaineers and hikers both domestic and foreign. Two lodges rich in tradition, Innerdalshytta and Renndølsetra. The peaks of Innerdalstårnet and Skarfjellet are popular goals for mountaineering enthusiasts. On the southern side of the valley you find Trolla, the highest mountain in the Trollheimen area, ond Vinnubreen, the biggest glacier in the country.

DRIVA

The river Driva was early known for its good salmon fishing and has since the 1820s tempted anglers from all over the world to try their luck. In later years Driva has also become known os a good traut river, among the best in Europe today.

HYDRO ALUMINIUM

The company was established to take advantage of the hydro-electric power plants in the respective villages to create aluminum plants. Hydro is the fourth largest integrated aluminium company world wide. In Norway Hydro has plants in Rjukan, Raufoss, Vennesla, Karmøy, Høyanger, Årdal, Sunndalsøra, Holmestrand and Magnor.

SKIING

Sunndal is also well worth a visit in winter. Several of the well-known peaks in the Sunndalsfjella mountains are cansidered among the greatest places for skiing in Norway. A perfect choice in the springtime is the Dronninga mountain (1.816 meters above sea level), fram which you see the Vinnubreen glacier on one side and straight down into Sunndalsfjorden on the other. Børsetlia alpine facility offers family-friendly slopes and is also an excellent starting point for cross-country skiing into the mountain areas.

HUNTING

The most important types of small game in Sunndal are grouse and hare. One can also hunt reindeer, deer, roe deer, and moose in Sunndal. Wild reindeer and deer are the most important big game here. The wild reindeer of the Snøhetta and the Sunndalsfjella mountain areas are unique.

FISHING

You do not need any licence for angling in the fjord. The most common types of fish one can catch in Sunndalsfjorden and Ålvundfjorden are pollack, cod, mackerel, herring, eel and seatrout.

Angling for salmon and traut in Driva and Litldalselva is allowed in the period from June to August 31, and in Usma from June 15 to September 15. Angling Iicences for Driva are sold at the Tourist information at Sunndalsøra. Licences for other rivers and private stretches are sold by the owners, and at some camping sites.

With the “Snøhetta common angling card” you can angle freely with angling rods in all the lakes in the Snøhetta and Sunndalsfjella areas, the mountain areas between Sunndalsøra, Oppdal and Dombås.

GOLF

Sunndal Golfclub is a golf course with 6 holes and a variation of difficulties. The course lies close to Tredal Farm.
