Siljan  Norway

Siljan municipality lies immediately to the east of Skien. Siljan muncipality has approximately 2.450 inhabitants and covers a area of 213,8 km2. It is a community based upon agriculture and forestry where some 90% of the forest is owned by Treschow-Fritzøe of Larvik. The Siljan elva river runs through the town, creating large and small pools well stocked with fish. The attractive and varied scenery has made Siljan a popular excursion area for the Grenland region. The highest point in Siljan municipality is Rådmannen mountain (646 meters.)

BYGDEBORGEN FORT

On a tongue of land by the Gorningen lake are the remains of a Bronze Age hill fort. When the warning beacon was lit people took their animals and retreated to the safety of the fort. The precipitous rocks made the fort well defensible against bandits.

MOHOLT IRONWORKS

The ironworks at Moholt started operations in 1731 as a subsidiary of the larger ironworks at Larvik. Today, one can see the remains of a blast furnace and a storehouse for charcoal the Coal Cellar – built by Swedish prisoners of-war in 1807-1809. The works lies on the road from the centre of Siljan to Kvelde, near the county border, and is signposted.

AUEN ECHOLOGICAL HERB FARM

Ecological herb farm with approximately 400 spices and medicinal plants. 18th-century house with sale of art and handicrafts as well as herbal products and plants. Canoe rental.

HIKING

Especially nice terrain in the area of Grorud towards Luksefjell and Skrim.

SKIING

Grenland Skicenter only 15 km from Skien against Siljan.

FISHING

Rugged countryside with many lakes. In Siljan you can fish in more than 80 lakes. Fishing licenses are sold at the tourist office in Skien.
