Fræna muncipality in Norway has approximately 9.700 inhabitants and covers a area of 369,0 km2. The main village and administrative centre is Elnesvågen with about 2,200 inhabitants. Moxy, Hustad Marmor, and Tine Meierier are all factories located in Elnesvågen. Other villages include Hustad, Bud, Tornes, Sylte, Malme, and Aureosen. The area is nice for hiking, including the mountains are Heiane/Lågheiane and Jendemsfjellet mountain. Hustadvika is an Eldorado for divers. Farstadsanden is a favourite place for windsurfers and surfers to congregate. There is also a superb sandy beach and bathing place for those who fancy a dip in the ocean.

There are good possibilities for rod-fishing from land all along this stretch of coastline, and the seawater is so clean and salt that you can safely boil both your catch and your potatoes in it.

Beachcombing is exciting for adults and children alike. The sea is never still, and is forever washing up a host of interesting things. Shorelife at ebb-tide, with its shells, shrimps, small crabs and fish, will keep most people absorbed and tascinated for hours on end.

EINESVÅGEN

Elnesvågen is the administrative centre and the village is located along the Frænafjorden about 20 kilometres north of the town of Molde, 6 kilometres east of the village of Tornes, and 8 kilometres northwest of the villages of Malme and Sylte. The area is predominantly an agricultural area; however, there are also several factories including Moxy Engineering (which produces trucks), the Hustadmarmor marble factory (which produces calcium products for European paper producers), and the Tine cheese factory (which is the largest producer of Jarlsberg cheese with exports to the UK, USA, Canada, Germany, and Australia). Myrbostad Church was built in 1880 in the eastern part of Elnesvågen. A combined association football-athletics stadium was completed in 1997. The best views of Elnesvågen are from the Heiane mountain, Lågheiane mountain and Gjendemsfjellet mountain. Heiane is most easily accessible from Hauglia, the major residential area in Elnesvågen.

HUSTAD

Hustad is a thriving village with food stores, a bank, parking facilities, and several other businesses. Hustad has the Stemshest mountains to the east and there are five lakes nearby that are well-stocked with trout. There are also numerous hiking paths such as the Atlanterhavsveien just 8 kilometres away. The Hustadvika coastal area is located just offshore of Hustad.

BUD

Bud was divided into Bud (eastern part) and Hustad (western part). The fishing village of Bud, which in the 16th-17th century was the most important trading centre between Bergen and Trondheim, is still a pleasant, bustling little place. Today it is still active in the fishing indnstry. The last National Congress in Norway was held at Bud (1533 AD). Here you will also find remains of the largest German defence works built in Norway during the last war.

BJØRNSUND

Deserted fishing community in idyllic surroundings. Bjørnsund can be seen from Bud and is reached by boat from Harøysund. Aronnd 1900 there were 5-600 people living here. The houses practically cling to the rocks, and their closeness to one another give them mutual shelter. Today a popular outdoor pursuits centre. Organised trips to Bjørnsund.

THE COASTAL FORT of ERGAN

A restored German subterranean fort from WW II. Includes command headquarters, cannons and a hospitalward. Exhibition of local war memorials.

BUD CHURCH

Is a cruciform church from 1717. During WW II the dome was found to be in the German line of fire and was subsequently taken down. Now restored.

THE TROLL CHURCH (TROLLKIRKA)

Some caves are unbelievably beautiful and Trollkyrkja (the Troll church) is one of them. Over the years the water has worked away at the layers of marble, and the resulting formations are like something from another world. The cave system consists of three huge chambers, in some places with warm and bright walls where daylight paints wonderful patterns. In other places they are ice cold and the surface of the rock almost blue. From the road walk for an hour up the mountainside before lighting torches and entering the remarkable world of Trollkyrkja. 3 exciting limestone grottoes, approximately 330 metres above sea level, with subterranean streams and a 14 metres waterfall. A fascinating experience!

ASLAKSTEINEN (Stone)

One of several naturally formed flat-topped mounds on the Hustad marshes. 200 metres high, it was used as the village fortress, a safe place during turbulent times. Numerous archeological findings. 30 minutes walk.

FISHING

Deep sea fishing enthusiasts can take a fishing trip out on the ocean. You can fish for salmon, sea trout and cod. Be aware that there are a number of special rules in regards to fishing. Remember to purchase a fishing licence.
