Brønnøy, Norway

Brønnøy muncipality has approximately 7.600 inhabitants and covers a area of 1.039,0 km2. Brønnøysund is the center of commerce, communication and service in the South-Helgeland region. Brønnøysund is located on the southern fringe of Nordland County. The principal industries are public and privat services, agriculture and mining. The local restaurants are widely recognized for their fine food. Brønnøysund´s tourist marina is one of the most popular on the Nordland coastline. Deep sea fishing and a hike in the mountains, topped with a night on the town, can easily be done between sunrise and sunset.

Everything nature has to offer, is within a short distance. In the east, fjords strech toward mountains with permanent snow and ice. In the west, thousands of islands, inlets, and sounds invite you to a coastal experience you won´t find anywhere else. You will easily find your own, special idyll here. Mount Torghatten is one of nature’s most peculiar wonders. The Coastal Express (Hurtigruten) calls in Brønnøysund in the afternoon, and this always creates some animation in the docks.

TORGHATTEN

For hundreds of years Torghatten has been visited by kings, emperors and tourists. Tradition has it that the hole in Torghatten was made by an arrow from Hestmannen – the “Horseman”. The Saga also narrate how the many mountains along our coast came to be. The hole in Torghatten is 160 metres long, 35 metres high and 15-20 metres wide. You are sure to be awed by the relentless forces of nature that have been at work for thousands of years. Torghatten lies only 15 kilometres away from Brønnøysund. You cross the Brønnøysund Bridge to the island Torget, which was a centre of power in the Viking Era. There is a good track leading to the hole (approximately 20 minutes on foot).

LOMSDAL

The Lomsdal river is unique in western Europe, and there are plans to make the area a national park to protect its unspoilt wilderness. Lomsdal has very good opportunities for walks and hikes.

HILDURS URTEARIUM

Just north of Brønnøysund, near Tilrem, we find Hildur’s Urterarium. A visit here will take you around the herb garden, the rose garden and the Viking Hall. You are offered a taste of herb soup and the house brand of wine, and learn more about local history from the Viking Era up to the present.

SKARSÅSEN COASTAL FORTRESS

Skarsåsen Kystfort is a fortification from the Second World War. Today, it is an attractive vista and excursions area. Information boards will tell you about the war history.

TOSEENVEIEN ROAD

We recommend a trip to Velfjord. Idyllic places such as Nevernes, where a Nordland-Boat Regatta takes place every year, can be found here. Just 2 km west of Hommelstø stands one of North Norway´s oldest timber churches from 1674. We also recommend a visit to Velfjord Bygdetun (local museum), four kilometres southeast of Hollestø, or to the farm Aanes, a farm cheese factory, in Nordfjellmark.

FISHING

Deep sea fishing enthusiasts can take a fishing trip out on the ocean. You can fish for salmon, cod and halibut. Be aware that there are a number of special rules in regards to fishing. Remember to purchase a fishing licence.

GOLF

Brønnøysund Golfclub is a golf course with 6 holes and a variation of difficulties. Drivingrange. The course lies approximately 8 km from Brønnøysund.
