Kos, Greece

Kos is an island in the Dodecanese group in Greece, next to the Aegean Sea. Among Kos’ most famous sons are Hippocrates, the father of medicine, Apelles, the painter, and poets Philitas and Theocritus.

Kos is the third largest of all the Dodecanese islands, and has a long, narrow shape with only two low mountains on the southern coast, Dikaio and Simpatro. The islands main port and capital, also named Kos, features whitewashed buildings, many hotels, and avenues lined with palm trees. There are also a small number of nightclubs located on the famous Bar Street. Kos features a 14th century fortress, erected by the Knights of Saint John of Rhones in 1315, located at the entrance to the harbor. The capital itself has much to offer: the castlel, parks with a lot of flowers, shopping streets, numerous monuments and beaches. 

This Greek island has a wonderful climate and it is also the bicycle island of Greece. Most of Kos is flat, so you can bike around. With the Greek sun in the sky and your feet on the pedals you can enjoy the real Greece. On the internet you will find many cycle routes on the island. There are even real bike trails and of course you can rent bikes everywhere.

Looking for Greek villages where time really is still remain, Kos is not the most obvious destination. But if you like great beaches, beautiful architecture, magnificent castles and beautiful nature, Kos is an excellent destination. In high season there may be pressure, the island is also a popular tourism destination and increasing each year. But like many other Greek islands also on Kos tourism is concentrated in the resorts and the bustling capital, so in the territory still can taste authentic Greek atmosphere.

A nice tip for a visit to the area of the five Asfendiou villages. Lagoudi, Zia, Asomatos, Evangelistria and Agios Dimitrios are all picturesque villages against the wooded slopes of the Dikaios mountain. You’ll find here beautiful basilicas and a traditional atmosphere.

Other villages worth your time if you are visiting Kos include Pili, Andimahia, which is perched upon a plateau in the middle of the island, Thermes, which holds wonderful hot springs and spas, Kardamena, a beautiful seaside resort, and Kefalos, which features a beautiful beach.

You can make your travel a combination with the island of Kalymnos or Patmos. If you go to Kalymnos you are flying via Kos anyway, so a combination is easily made. After a week of cycling on Kos, Kalymnos is a lovely island to continue to rest. Staying on Kos, you can also make a daytrip to Kalymnos , the island of sponges. Other boattrips go to Rhodes, the volcano island Nissyros and the Turkish town of Bodrum.
