Stara Novalja is a coastal village located on the northern shore of Pag Island, within Lika-Senj County in Croatia. Nestled in a sheltered bay, it lies just northeast of the town of Novalja and is not visible from the mainland, which adds to its secluded charm. The name “Stara Novalja” translates to “Old Novalja,” distinguishing it from the newer, more developed town nearby. Historically, this area was the original settlement before expansion shifted toward what is now Novalja.
Historical Background
Stara Novalja has roots as a traditional fishing village, with a history dating back to Roman times. In 2004, a significant archaeological discovery was made in the bay: a sunken Roman merchant ship from the 1st century BC. Led by local diver Dražen Peranić, the excavation revealed over one hundred amphorae and two lead anchors. These artifacts are now housed in the museum in Novalja, offering insight into the region’s maritime trade during antiquity.
The village’s transformation into a resort destination began in the late 20th century, as its calm waters and mild Mediterranean climate attracted visitors seeking tranquility away from the busier tourist hubs.
Attractions and Activities
Stara Novalja is known for its peaceful atmosphere and scenic 4-kilometre-long bay, ideal for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. The shallow, warm waters make it especially suitable for families with children. The area is also popular among snorkelers due to its clear visibility and underwater archaeological sites.
Local tip: Visit the pebble beach Trincel, located at the southern end of the bay. It’s less crowded than nearby beaches and offers excellent conditions for sunbathing and swimming.
Walking and Cycling
The surrounding landscape features gentle hills and coastal paths perfect for walking and cycling. A popular route leads from Stara Novalja to Novalja, passing olive groves and offering panoramic views of the Velebit mountain range across the Pag Bay.
Local tip: Early morning walks along the waterfront promenade are especially rewarding, with calm seas and views of fishing boats returning to port.
Culinary Highlights
Local cuisine in Stara Novalja reflects the island’s traditions, with a focus on seafood, lamb, and Pag cheese (Paški sir). Several family-run konobas (traditional taverns) serve freshly caught fish and octopus prepared in olive oil and local herbs.
Local tip: Try the grilled calamari at Konoba Toni, a well-regarded eatery known for its authentic island recipes and friendly service.
