The coastline, including the fjords, is 48 kilometres long. The land climbs steeply from the shores, and fjords cut into the land creating good places for settlements and harbours. From east to west these are: Nesvåg, Nordfjord, Rekefjord, Løgevik, Sogndalstrand, Jøssingfjord and Åna-Sira. The township of Sokndal covers an area of approximately 295,1 km2 in Norway.

The population numbers approximately 3.300. Of this number, about 2.000 live in Hauge i Dalane, which is the centre of the municipality and where the local administrative offices are located. Bus connection to the surrounding district is good. The township’s internal road network is well developed. Most employment is to be found in industry. There is mining, a crushing plant, asphalt work, foundry, fish industry and an oyster farm.

Commerce and service industries are well developed, as is the public sector. Many young people have found employment lately in the primary industries of agriculture and fisheries.

JØSSINGFJORD

The first acts of war in World War II on Norwegian ground took place in February 1940. The German prison chip, Altmark, carrying 300 allied prisoners was liberated by the British destroyer Cossack. This episode gave rise to the term “Jøssing”. A memorial has been erected near to the North Sea Road. Turn off at the power station in Jøssingfjord and visit the smallholding at Helleren. The two 1600s houses are tangible evidence of the determined effort to survive in impossible terrain.

SOGNDALSTRAND

Make a detour from Hauge i Dalane and visit Sogndalstrand and its listed timber buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Up until 1944, trade and the shipping and fishing industries flourished in Sogndal. The Museum of Fishing is open on Sundays in July and August, or by prior arrangement.

ROCKING STONE

Are you strong enough to move 70 tonnes? lmagine moving a 70 tonne stone on your own. Take the turning by the car park near the Linepollen bathing spot. Follow the signs to Ruggesteinen – Northern Europe´s largest boulder.

ATTRACTIONS

The Altmark memorial stone in Jøssingfjord, the old houses at Helleren in Jøssingfjord, Northern Europe’s largest “rocking stone”, the Sokndal church, the fisheries museum and the old wooden houses at Sogndalstrand, the rock carvings at Haneberg and the creation of Jøssingen.

FISHING

Sokndal township has an excellent hiking terrain and a lot of good sea and fresh water fishing.
