Edenkoben in Germany is a village with 6800 inhabitants and an area of 18km².

The summer residence of Ludwig I. of Bavaria; Villa Ludwigshoehe, lies beneath the ruins of castle Rietburg.

Ludwig I. bought the grounds from the municipalities of Edenkoben and Rhodt in 1845. The construction of this italian style residence was started with the laying of the foundation stone in 1846 and finished by leading architect Friedrich Wilhelm von Gaertner in 1852. Due to the death of the architect in 1847 and the abdication of Ludwig I. in 1848 the construction took several years.

Ludwig I. was visiting Ludwigshoehe all two years in July and August to celebrate his birthday, last visiting the residence in 1866.

Since 1975 Villa Ludwigshoehe is owned by the federal state rhineland – palatinate, accommodating the Max Slevogt gallery.
