At the Ørvella crossroads the Rv lI changes direction slightly, and Heddal becomes Hjartdal. With the precipitous sides of the mountains of Heksefjell and Mælefjell to the south, cultivated slopes to the north and Hjartsjå and Hjartdøla shining in the bottom of the valley, this is certainly one of Telemark´s finest vistas. The municipality highest peak is Mælefjell (413 meters). The district covers 791,5 km2 and has a population of approximately 1.600 mainly engaged in forestry and farming. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Sauland.

• TUDDAL

In Tuddal, on the sunny side of Telemark’s highest mountain, Gaustatoppen, 1883 m.o.h, you will experience a hospitable and informal atmosphere. With a location in central southern Norway, there are many who apply to the village and the mountains for recreation and rest. The village has a long tradition of welcoming tourists, and in addition you will find a living rural culture here.

• TUDDAL RURAL MUSEUM

Tuddal Bygdetun museum lies on small site in the middle of the community. and boasts a fine little collection of houses and objects. These include two cottages from the 17th century, a cookhouse, storehouses, as well as a cotter’s farm and a mountain summer farm.

• BONDAL

Bondal is a community in the at the end of the Tuddal valley under Gaustatoppen’s west side and has some very old buildings. Powerful and beautiful scenery with numerous lakes.

BUEN CULTURAL WORKSHOP

Buen Kultur Workshop is a centre for genuine folk culture in Telemark where you will find traditional art and folk music. Concerts and informal lectures can also be arranged and sales exhibitions are held throughout the whole of July.

HIKING

A breathtaking route to Gaustatoppen mountain which runs from Sauland in the municipality of Hjartdal, to Dale in the municipality of Tinn. The scenery along the way varies between gorges, woodland, streams and lakes, well-tended farms and sheer mountains. The road runs through the village of Tuddal and from there rises to Flistjønnskaret. the road’s highest point at 1,260 metres above sea level. This is Norway’s second highest mountain pass. The road continues to Stavsro, starting point for trips to Gaustatoppen (1,883 metres above sea level) and the so-called sirens’ cave. There is a kiosk, tourist information office and toilets here. The road continues on to Dale in Tinn.

THE PRIEST´S TRAlL

A well-marked trail linking Fellessetra in Hjartdal to Hogstul in Tuddal. Legend has it that the parish priest used this trail when he went to Tuddal to hold his service every three weeks. The footpath was therefore called “Prestevegen” or the priest s trail. The parishes of Hjartdal and Nord-Bondal have many well preserved places of interest.
