Ambleside is a picturesque and bustling historic town in the south of the Lake District, just a mile from Lake Windermere. Borne out of what was once an industrial town Amblesides wonderful atmosphere and scenery now attracts visitors from all over the world. Remnants of the industrial era still remain, visible in the traditional stone buildings with their slate roofs.
Steeped in history dating back to Viking and Roman times and with the likes of Galava Fort and Stock Ghyll Force waterfall to visit there is plenty for tourists and visitors to see and do. Throughout the year there are various events taking place. St Mary’s Church with it’s magnificent spire holds a Rushbearing ceremony in early July when children parade through the town with rushes and flowers to mark the medieval custom. In early August Rydal Park hosts its annual sheep dog trials, and fell running competition.
For lovers of the great outdoors there are many interesting walks, the area is perfect for fell walking in particular and the crags offer inspiration for rock climbing and outdoor pursuits, mountain biking and cycling are also very popular here.
The town also has many unique and individual shops selling goods produced by local artists. There are galleries and museums to be explored as well as William Wordsworths former home and gardens at Rydal Mount.
From the breathtaking scenery and delightful gardens to the charming buildings and places of interest Ambleside has something for everyone.
