Suldal, with its 1.736,2 km2, is Rogaland´s largest municipality as part of Norway. Suldal have approximately 4.000 inhabitants. Its nature varies from attractive fjord landscape to high mountains where reindeer roam. The main town is Sand, with good shopping facilities, a tertiary school with both general and trade courses, and a hotel by the fjord. The Ryfylke museum is also located at Sand. The famous Unkarsfestivalen (Single Festival) is held here.
Suldal municipality benefited greatly from the years it took to construct the largest power station in Norway. Suldal has been called the most industry-friendly municipality in Rogaland. This attitude created new jobs for the villages, among them at a barrel factory at Jelsa. Agriculture and forestry are also important.
The largest number of emigrants from Rogaland to the United States came from the Suldal region. The cultural heritage of Suldal is of renown. One of the many attractions are the Kolbeitveitun. Johan Veka, a Suldal teacher, has been a cultural force in the inner Ryfylke for an entire generation.
Suldal´s salmon fishing is famous. The Suldalslågen river is one of Norway´s most famous Atlantic salmon rivers. The Suldalslågen and upstream watercourse is heavily dammed and regulated (including transfer of water across catchmetn borders) for hydroelectric power generation, and represents 6 % of Norway´s total hydroelectric power generation.
The mountain Kistenuten is located at the triple border point of Rogaland, Hordaland and Telemark. Other mountains in Suldal are Vassdalseggi, the highest mountain in Rogaland, Trollaskeinuten, Snønuten, Melsnuten, Knoda, Fitjanuten, Leirnuten, Kaldafjellet, Simlenuten, Steinkilenuten and Raudberga, all reaching above 1,400 meters.
SALMON STUDIO
In Sand there is a salmon studio in Sandsfossen. Watch the fish on their way upstream through a large, underwater window. This year there is a new exhibtion on fishing, research and the history of the river.
NESA WHARF at SAND
The main collections of the Ryfylke Museum. The exhibition includes a multivision show which brings to life the historical Sand. Art exhibitions are on view at Gallery Ryfylke. Open all year.
RYFYLKE MUSEUM
“Brødrene af Sand”, an old sloop, newly restored is owned by Ryfylke Museum. In the summer you may join our saling excursions on 13, 20 and 27 July and 3 Aug. We leave Nesa wharf in Sand at 3.30pm. Duration: three hours. Reservations at Suldal Tourist Information wthin 6 pm the previous day. Min. 10 passengers.
KVEDNAHOLA
An old mill owned by Ryfylke Museum, Kvednahola is situated by the shop at Vasshus. An exciting stop for travelers!
IRON AGE BURIAL
At Ritland is the largest Iron Age burial ground in Rogaland, where between 40 and 50 burial mounds lie on a fertile plain on the banks of the Suldalslågen.
KOLBEINSTVEIT FARMSTEAD
Bygdetunet Kolbeintstvet is owned by Ryfylke Museum and is an old farm dating from about 1850. A loft hall, Guggedalsloftet, the oldest wooden building in Rogaland has been reerected here. Open 17 June to 3 August.
RØYNEVARDEN CROFT
The Røynevarden Husmannsplassen is owned by Ryfylke Museum and is situated high on the moors with a fine view of Suldalsvatnet. Excellent place to visit. Bring sandwiches and coffee and have a picnic outside the farmstead. No guide.
KVILLDAL POWER STATION
Norway´s largest power station is located by Surdalsvatnet lake in Kvilldal. Guided tours in the summer. Please contact Tourst Information for further information.
BLÅSJØ RESERVOIR
Be sure to visit Blåsjø lake, one of the largest hydropower reservoirs in Norway, with an area of 82 km2. The reservoir is contained by eleven dams, large and small. Oddatjørn dam is 142 metres high, and Førevass dam is even bigger – the largest concrete dam in Norway. The mountain road to the lake usually opens in June or July, depending on the melting snow. JELSA
Enjoy a guided tour of Jelsa church, the old Schoolhouse Museum, and Noresjøen. The church at Jelsa, which was built in 1647, is one of the few privately owned churches in Norway. The ceiling is a painted vault of stars! Open 17 June to 13 August, daily 12-4 pm.
SANDAL MAGNA GALLERY
The gallery is situated in the Sandal Magna guesthouse. It is open noon 4pm daily, from 15 April until 15 Sept. During the winter months, the gallery is open Saturdays and Sundays only (same hours). Permanent exhibitions, as well as special exhibitions during the spring and summer.
