Nestling in the picturesque Eden Valley on the A685 in East Cumbria, Kirkby Stephen is a quaint little market town steeped in history, and ideal for touring both the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales. The railway station is on the Settle to Carlisle Line and offers easy access to this delightful area for tourists and visitors.
The town itself is built alongside the River Eden and is actually on the line of the Coast to Coast walk making it a popular base for walkers and also climbers visiting the fells.
Strolling round the town with its narrow streets and alleyways you will find plenty of interesting buildings many with historical connections, and a range of shops including specialist outlets, craft shops and antique shops. There are a number of eateries and bars with something to suit everyone.
The striking parish church, approached from the market square is known as the “Cathedral of the Dales” due to its size and importance, the stunning red sandstone cloisters which were built in the early 1800’s form the entrance to it.
